Mobile+Social+Gaming : Is it a winning trifecta?

Actually, this article is more about comparing the US to other countries when it comes to these technologies. But seeing those 3 words together has a certain feeling. Maybe its because i see it happening. More importantly I see very normal, non-geeky, users beginning to participate. Good or bad, it doesn't matter. It just IS.

My Favorite Holiday Ringtone - Free

xmas_greetings

Clive Shepherd is a brilliant eLearning Professional in the UK.  But you may not know that he is an even more fabulous musician.  Every year I look forward to loading up a little ditty he wrote as my holiday ringtone.

Enjoy! And Merry Christmas!

[UPDATE 12/22/10: To be clear, Clive did not write the jingle JUST for me.  He simply wrote the tune and posted it too his blog.  I thought it would be great as a ringtone and used Garageband to convert it into one for my iPhone. NO.  I did not commission Clive to write me a ringtone...however ;-)]

Harvard Physics Professor "Gets it"

Eric Mazur is AWESOME! Its this type of higher ed professor that drives change in the classroom. Having students become "oblivious to the instructor" is scary to most professors, but not Eric. He embraces the technology that drives the most powerful learning experiences.

The video is 1hour and 20mins but its well worth watching it.

(I hope the embed code below shows the video. I was not able to select it via Amplify so lets see what happens.)

The Fractal Nature of Enterprise 2.0

Special thanks to @moehlert for tweeting this. I've always loved the idea of fractals even though I never could figure out a use for them. But for some strange reason this idea of the fractal nature of the enterprise is clear to me. Maybe I understand fractals better than I thought....I don't know.

What strikes me is the fact that there will always be patterns of collaboration and in a sense structure of some sort. But what changes, I think, is the nature of how that structure is driven and defined. The forced fractal of old represented as an org chart, will, and must, one day become a more fluid pattern that evolves and adapts to the current immediate business environment in an effort to become most efficient.

I think the most complex element of this enterprise 2.0 stuff is the human ego. I'm not sure we ever really take that into consideration when we talk about the beauty of self-forming teams, and more fluid forming organizations and work groups. Ideally I'd like to think this will work, but practically given the nature of human beings, I'm not sure its sustainable.

LinkedIn profile as printable resumé

I was wondering when this was going to happen. Do they let you upload a video yet? I suppose you can just post something to YouTube and then post a link on your linkedin profile. But I really think richer media content is going to be the new distinguishing factor for candidates.

And all you resume, job-getting experts, that tell me NO because people will judge you, and bla, bla, bla...well...let's just say I'm sad for your clients. The people out there getting the BEST jobs are the ones willing to be who they are and that includes their weakness as well as their strengths. BTW - what hiring manager these days CAN'T read through the b.s. of turning a weakness into a strength? Are you kidding me? A weakness is a weakness... OWN IT!

But I digress...

Printing from LinkedIn surely is a step in the right direction.

Turn your LinkedIn Profile into a Printable Resume

linkedin resume

The team at LinkedIn Labs has released a new online tool called Resume Builder that, as the name suggests, will turn your LinkedIn Profile into an impressive-looking resume.

All you need to do is log in with your LinkedIn account and authorize the app to access your data – it then fetches your entire profile information that you’ve shared on Linked and turns it into a neat and printable PDF.

If you are not happy with the default layout of your resume, don’t worry as there are about a dozen elegant templates to choose from. Once ready, you can either download the generated resume as a PDF file or just continue hosting it on the LinkedIn site.

LinkedIn profiles support the Markdown Syntax so you may easily insert bulleted lists, hyperlinks, change font sizes, etc. in your resume with the help of some simple markup. For instance, adding an asterisk symbol before some text will transform it into a list item while hash signs will translate text lines into headings like H1, H2, etc.

World's BEST Presentation Contest Winners

I just clicked through the 1st Place winner. Very well done. I started out not interested in the content because I'm not a smoker and now most of the nasty facts, and statistics. But I was surprised as how well the story kept me engaged up until the very end. And that reinforced many of my beliefs around great visual design, and well told stories, as a primary factor in technology based learning.

There is no way these slides would ever need a human being to "present" them. And yet most presentation are useless without one. eLearning CAN and DOES work when the proper design elements are fully engaged.

I will definitely be taking some time to view the rest of these great presentations.

vlingo: Voice Control Goodness

Wow! I really hope this is real. I just discovered it on Jane Hart's pick of the day. If I could work work the way the movie/cartoon portrays the app to work I will be in HEAVEN!!! Great new app to debut at mLearnCon 2011 as well...if it works the way I hope it will. I have not tested yet.

Cracking the Engagement Nut - Social Media is Everyone's Job

Here's a great reference to use when trying to convince your boss about social media. Seriously! It took them long enough to figure it out. But at least they got there. So, maybe there's help for the millions of command and control orgs still trying to "manage" social media.

Why The New York Times eliminated its social media editor position

“Social media can’t belong to one person; it needs to be part of everyone’s job,” Preston said. “It has to be integrated into the existing editorial process and production process. I’m convinced that’s the only way we’re going to crack the engagement nut.”

While some journalists at the Times were already using those sites, there wasn’t a newsroom-wide understanding of why the tools mattered. “At the beginning there was some resistance among my colleagues about using these tools,” Preston said. “What did I hear at the very beginning? ‘Twitter is all about what people are having for lunch.’ Now, no one says that anymore.”

EventPilot's Creator Eric Converse Finalist - Event Solutions Spotlight Awards

Eric Converse from ATIV software is a finalist in the Rising Star Male category of the Event Solutions Spotlight Awards. Eric is the brilliant coder behind ATIV's EventPilot mobile event platform. If you haven't been to an event that uses EventPilot then you truly haven't experienced the future of event technology. DevLearn is SO lucky to have worked with Eric and Silke on the EventPilot. Honestly, when I attend other events that DON'T use it, I'm totally frustrated. Its truly leaps and bounds ahead of every other event app out there. Good luck, Eric!
