How to Prepare for DevLearn08 - Learning in a Web2.0 World

Besides packing fresh pants and a comfy pair of shoes, you'll want to have your digital life packed and ready to go as well. So, get started TODAY! Be sure you are technology-enabled before landing in San Jose, CA next week.

www.devlearn2008com - Check out everything and familiarize yourself with the program.  DevLearnLIVE is a great place to find social networking for the event.

1) TWITTER - Go to twitter.com and sign up for an account. Go to twitter.com/dl08 and look for the Follow button under the avatar icon. Click it! You are now "following" the DevLearn08 twitter feed.  You can have these messages sent your phone as text msgs, or you can view them in a web browser, desktop app, or mobile app.

2) QR Codes - Enable your cell phone to decode QR codes.  Resources can be found HERE.  You will be given a personal QR code when you register so that other participants can simply "scan" your code and get your contact information.

3) Bring your laptop - I don't understand why more people don't bring laptops, so I'm encouraging you to do so.  Internet access is FREE in the Fairmont event area (codes are in the program guide).  If you sign up for the Presidents club at the Fairmont (Free) you will get free Internet access in your room.  This is a technology conference and you should be taking time to experiment with the new tools you discover.

4) Bring your cell phone - (see #1 and #2) - Mobile Learning is gaining in popularity and you should start understanding how to leverage all the processing power sitting in your pocket.

Anyone else care to offer up some suggestions?

I would suggest bringing a stack of business cards too, somehow they seem fun to still trade. It's still a quick way to trade info and then you can put them electronically somewhere after. As a tip: my business card is from my organization, but it doesn't have my blog address on it. This I put on stickers and put on the back of my cards. That way the people I met (and you'll meet tons) will be able to reach you that way as well.

Outstanding tip! Kickin' it old school is sometimes the best way to go ;-) Love the sticker idea too!
I'm a big fan of the MOO cards however I totally forgot to get them printed this year. But I know Mark Oehlert didn't forget...he never forgets. Track him down at DevLearn08 and ask to see his MOO card.

I always forgert to bring (or bring enough) business cards. So I use DropCard (http://mydropcard.com/profile.php) and simply use my cell phone to send my business card (and more) on the spot to the person's e-mail. It's instant and imports to their Outlook.

Dropcard is optimized for text messaging.

To use it after setting up your profile, open a new message and type
"drop johndoe@email.com" and hit send. That's it, they've received your contact info (and can save it to their address book). If your friend signs up to the service, you'll immediately receive their info.

For example, you could...
Text drop johndoe@email.com to 41411 or skip @ with space johndoe email.com

If its a gmail account then simply

Text drop johndo to 41411

You may have noticed that all texts go to 41411. You'll also receive a confirmation text message from 41411, the service used to send and receive text messages.
